With reference to the proposals made in
Sir William Robinson's Despatch No. 294 of the 29th. December,
1896, and approved in your Despatch No. 43 of the 19th. February, 1897, I have the honour to inform you that on the 12th, of last September Dr. Chung King-ue tendered his resigna- tion, being unable through sickness to perform his duties as House Surgeon to the Tung Wah Hospital, and that on the advice
of the Directors of that Institution Dr. Chiu Hok has been
appointed in his place at the salary of $1,800 per annum, which will be paid out of the vote "Grant for Salary of
Resident Surgeon, Tung Wah Hospital' at page 41 of the Esti-
mates forwarded to you under cover of my Despatch No. 465
of the 24th. ultimo.
2.
In connection with this appointment it
has been recommended by the Principal Civil Medical Officer
and Dr. Thom son that Dr.
the Permanent Medical Establishment of the Colony. The Direct-
ors of the Hospital have been consulted in the matter and they
acquiesce in the arrangement. Dr. Chiu Hok is a capable man and I think it would strengthen his position if he were made
